Johnny Depp, aka Jack Sparrow

28 June 2011

Here’s RJ’s drawing of Jack Sparrow. I originally posted this drawing last May but I’m one proud Mama so I’ll post it again today.

Jack Sparrow

He’s good, right? Although he followed a step-by-step guide in You Tube, I think not all 10-year olds can perfectly end up with a drawing like that.

Thanks to sis Willa for creating this meme, now I can force (yes, he has the talent but too lazy to draw) my son to give me one good drawing every week.

cellular phone for RJ's birthday

24 June 2011

If RJ can choose a gadget, aside from handheld games, he'll definitely choose a cellular phone for a birthday gift. Just like me, he wants a Galaxy cellular phone complete with Samsung cell phone accessories.

samsung galaxy accessories

I am very concerned with the abuse his eyes are getting from playing PSP and Nintendo DSi, handheld games, and too much television watching. The Galaxy cellular phone has a glare-free screen so it won’t do much harm to his eyes if coupled with a screen protector.

RJ borrows my cellular phone just to watch You Tube, he loves watching re-runs of his favorite cartoon shows. The new 4G model comes with the hot new movie "INCEPTION" pre-loaded on a micro SD card for instant viewing, how cool is that!

quotes on a rainy day

rainy day Don't wait for a storm to pass,
Learn how to dance in the rain.

Anyone who says
sunshine brings happiness
has never danced in the rain.

Everybody wants happiness,
Nobody wants pain,
But you can't have a rainbow,
Without a little rain.

Finding the right mortgage

Are you planning to purchase a new home? A mortgage can be a big help in reducing the expensive cost of buying a property in this time of financial crisis. Whether searching for a new mortgage, refinancing, or a home equity loan, comparing different reputable companies should be the first step in choosing the best option to fit your needs.

Compare different lending companies by researching online reviews and doing offline interviews with people who recently bought new homes. Ask each lender about interest rates, down payment and the list of fees.

Make sure that the lender's credit and debt online analyzer uses an encrypted date, security verification and server protection.

RJ's 10th Birthday

23 June 2011

It was RJ's 10th birthday yesterday. We just celebrated it in the house. I surprised him with two of his favorites: Carbonara and Mango Float.

RJ's 10th birthday

It's not allowed to have birthday celebrations in school. He'll have one tomorrow, June 24, with the family. He's so excited because he's expecting Ben 10 toys from his Aunties.

Happy Birthday My Baby! Always be an obedient boy and never forget that Mama loves you very much.

The greediness of school bus service owners

21 June 2011

That is very common with the school buses accredited in my son's school. They are all greedy. There are only 10 school days this June but they still charge a full fee. They are so addicted to charging too much.
school bus owners collect huge amounts of money

It's understandable if they pay their drivers and school service assistants on a monthly basis. But no, the said employees only get paid on days when there's school. They don't get paid on holidays and when there's no school because of typhoons.

I should practice driving. I don't like giving too much money to these people.

Happy Birthday RJ!

Happy Birthday to My Baby RJ

Tomorrow, June 22, is my son’s birthday. He’s turning 10. Happy Birthday to My Baby RJ!

I have my own Mac in school

17 June 2011

My son was not happy that summer break is over. I got worried the day before school opening. "I don't like to go to school", he keeps telling me. I could have homeschooled him instead. But he said, "No, I don't want to be homeschooled", when I asked him before the enrollment period.

Mac computer lab
Yesterday was the first day of school. I asked how school was and he said he likes computer subject the most. Everyone in class has his own Mac computer, probably bought in bulk from discount computers store.

Today, I didn't hear him say "I don't like school". Hopefully I won't hear him say that for the rest of the year and for many school years to come.

School bag for sale

This week is the first week of another school year for RJ. He's now in 4th grade. There's a school requirement that's a bit absurd.

old stroller bag

The school bag. I found out during the opening of classes that small school bags are allowed inside the school. A small bag won't accommodate all the books that the students need everyday. Why would the school implement that rule? They might as well tell the students to leave their books in the house because it will never fit inside a small bag.

RJ has a new bag that costs us an arm and leg! I already sent a letter to the principal that "we can not (underlined, I wanted to put bold letters but that would give the impression that I'm shouting at the principal) afford to buy another new bag because we already maximized our finances during the enrollment period".

I'm still waiting for the principal's call. But for now, RJ is using that big new bag.

If the principal won't allow RJ to use the new bag, then I don't have a choice but to sell it. Any takers?

credit card information hacked

11 June 2011

Although accidents do happen, an unauthorized access of credit card information is no accident at all. This situation should prompt the credit card company to develop a tighter, more secure online system. Citigroup revealed, read the full story at Third Planet News, that 200,000 of the company's credit card customer information was recently hacked.

I don't have a credit card now but I had one before. Because I don't want to take the risk of forgetting to pay on time, whenever I use the card I usually pay the next day. I'm debt-free and worry-free because of that decision.

Do you have a credit card? You should research on what you should do to keep your personal information safe from getting hacked.

Rule-Out Asthma, The Sooner The Better

08 June 2011

Guest Post: Joy of Notepad Corner

Both of my two sons were asthmatic. My eldest son, who’s now 21 has fully recovered from asthma. My youngest son, 11 years old has less asthma attacks since age 5. How I make it happen? Let me tell you the story.

JM, my eldest son was diagnosed having asthma at the age of 7, his attacks were not so severe and approaches only during changes of weather. My youngest son, on the other hand has severe asthma attacks diagnosed at the age of 1.

Like most mothers, we rely on our pediatricians when our kids are sick and not feeling well. I am the type who is not contented on only one physician. I always opt for second and third opinion and I prefer older doctors due to experience wise. It is not that I do not trust them, I just want to make sure, because Yahmir is not getting any better for a year of repetitive asthma attacks, and it only worsens on the next approach.

The fifth pediatrician who’s been treating Yahmir recommended us to his friend Allergologist. He told us that it is much better for Yahmir to be seen and treated by a specialist because of the severity of his respiratory disorder.

An Allergologist is a medical specialist on allergies. He informed us that once you’ve been diagnosed with asthma, your doctor may prescribe more than one asthma medication to relieve asthma symptoms and control asthma for the long-term.

Asthma is described as a chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes that causes swelling and narrowing (constriction) of the airways. The result is difficulty in breathing, and wheezing. The bronchial narrowing is usually either totally or at least partially reversible with treatments.

Yahmir had undergone several allergen tests to rule out what triggers his asthma. There are two categories that triggers it.

1. allergens (specific)
  • "seasonal" pollens
  • year-round dust mites, molds, pets, and insect parts
  • foods, such as fish, egg, peanuts, nuts, cow's milk, and soy
  • additives, such as sulfites
2. nonallergens -- mostly irritants (nonspecific).
  • tobacco smoke
  • outdoor factors, such as smog, weather changes, and diesel fumes
  • indoor factors, such as paint, detergents, deodorants, chemicals, and perfumes
  • emotional factors, such as laughing, crying, yelling, and distress
His allergen test which included skin and blood tests showed that he has allergies on the first two allergens mentioned above and peanuts. He is sensitive also to sudden weather changes and perfumes. These allergens often activate symptoms. Thus, aside from asthma he is also diagnosed having allergic rhinitis.

His medication included a bronchodilator, an antihistamine/corticosteroid and a nasal spray. The reason why we bought a home nebulizer for home medication.

In my experience it is also very important that you observe the side effects of the medicines that was being prescribed to your kids. Albuterol has shaking or trembling effects on Yahmir that’s why it was change to Terbutaline, the bronchodilator in the form of syrup.

For his nebulizing, he was prescribed with Ipratropium + Salbutamol nebule. This is also a bronchodilator which treats wheezing and shortness of breath.

For his Allergic Rhinitis, he was given a nasal spray – Physiomer. It relieves congestion & helps restore nasal respiration. I also use it too when my allergic rhinitis attacks.

Lastly, he was given Ketotifen Fumarate, a medicine for a long term control. It is an anti-inflammatory drug, a second-generation H1-antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer, to minimize the frequency and severity of asthma attacks, but Ketotifen is not effective in treating an active asthma attack (acute attack). Yahmir was prescribed to take this medicine for a year.

May I reiterate that the above mentioned medicines are prescribed by Yahmir’s Allergologist for his respiratory condition, and they might not be suitable for your child’s condition.

Never ever, self-medicate or home medicate your children suffering from asthma. It is best to seek medical help to rule out the standing condition and severity of the disorder.

One last thing, never give your children larger doses than is prescribed by your doctor.

A Day At The Beach

07 June 2011

We went to a beach resort, 45-minute drive from our house, last Saturday. May is a rainy month on this island already but it was surprisingly very sunny that day. Swimming on the beach and building a sand castle are included on RJ’s to-do list this summer break so he was very happy that day. The water was so clear and there were small fishes swimming near the shoreline.

fun day at the beach

I was the official photographer slash videographer of the group. I was planning to upload everything that I took while we were still in the resort so everyone who wasn’t able to come can see how the kids had a great time at the beach. But aside from the fact that I forgot to bring the laptop, the resort does not have an internet connection also.

RJ wants to spend another day at the beach, a different beach. But he’s the only one in the family who’s still on vacation. The school year, in most school’s in the country, has officially opened yesterday. RJ’s school opening is on June 15. He has to wait for a school break, and for the rainy season to end -maybe in November, he can have another fun day at the beach.

RJ is turning 10 in a few days

03 June 2011

My son RJ is turning 10 years old this month. I was already eyeing the party invitations, where his teacher bought Christmas Party Invitations for their class, but he said that he doesn't want to have a birthday party.

Birthday Invitation

Since his birthday this year falls in the middle of a school-week, we'll just have a simple dinner in the house. Hopefully we'll push through with the Disney trip that he wants in lieu of a birthday party. He's been asking for that trip for a few years already. I was waiting for the time that he's old enough to do things by himself, maybe this year is the right time.

Nintendo Break

I decided to put RJ on Nintendo Break.

We have an agreement that he can only play his Nintendo DSi for 3 hours everyday. We're on vacation, in the province, for a month already and the only time that he's not holding his Nintendo is when he's asleep at night. My niece has her own Nintendo and she can play anytime that she wants to play. I allowed RJ to have the same privilege provided that he stops playing when I ask him to stop and rest his eyes.

But that privilege made him disobedient and disrespectful. He's always angry especially when he doesn't win a game.

Nintendo DSi

So starting today until school starts, no Nintendo DSi for him.
