My son wants to have his own cellular phone. I actually gave him one about a year or two ago but he seldom use it. His school doesn't allow grade schoolers to bring any gadget in school, including cellular phones. I could already buy a nice dress with what I spent on his mobile phone, a few since his is the cheapest in the market, so I told him I won't buy him a new one anymore.

Kids his age don't need a mobile phone yet. I had one when I was 23 years old already, a few years after the first brand of cellular phone was launched. Although he'll get left out, since most of his peers own high-end mobile phones, I want teach him that he can't have everything that he wants.

I usually do blog post drafts on my cellular phone's Quick Office application. I noticed that everything loads pretty slow, even opening a text message, after only a year of using the phone. I guess cellular phones, no matter how big the storage capacity is, can only accommodate a few installed applications and games.

I decided to buy an iPod touch 4G so I can still write blog posts even when I'm out of the house. I have to look for a good document management system. I need one that has the capability to store and organize documents. So far, I'm happy with my choice to buy an iPod touch. Loading time is excellent. It's even much lighter than my cellular phone, very easy to carry anywhere I go.

If RJ can choose a gadget, aside from handheld games, he'll definitely choose a cellular phone for a birthday gift. Just like me, he wants a Galaxy cellular phone complete with Samsung cell phone accessories.

I am very concerned with the abuse his eyes are getting from playing PSP and Nintendo DSi, handheld games, and too much television watching. The Galaxy cellular phone has a glare-free screen so it won’t do much harm to his eyes if coupled with a screen protector.

RJ borrows my cellular phone just to watch You Tube, he loves watching re-runs of his favorite cartoon shows. The new 4G model comes with the hot new movie "INCEPTION" pre-loaded on a micro SD card for instant viewing, how cool is that!

cool landline phone

No, that's not a real skull. That's our landline phone right now. Although more appropriate during halloween month, this is what we currently use. I saw this while browsing the shops in a mall and was about to ignore it until RJ said, "Cool! A skull phone!" The eyes light up when it rings.

I ended up buying it for 650 pesos (from the original price of 800). I am a certified cheapskate mom.

Conference calls and loud speaker phone features are not included though.

can't live without his gadgets?

Of course he can. There are days when I don't allow him to go online or play his handheld games. Believe it or not, he can survive without his gadgets and be even more productive.

There was a time when I was also addicted to playing computer games. SIMS is one of my favorite games. The characters can sleep, cook, work, go clubbing, fall in love even! Who doesn't want to create his own destiny or control other people (once in a while?). To get over my addiction to SIMS, I deleted the program installed on my computer. As simple as that.

 RJ's priorities, no matter how many times I've lectured him about using his God-given talents, are plants vs zombies, facebook and nintendo games. To solve that problem, I ban him from using computer and video games during school days.

20/20 forever

This blue eyeglasses look so cute. But not when I imagine RJ, my 8 year old son, wearing it. He is very addicted with online games as well as with his handheld game consoles right now. I am very concerned that he will have poor eyesight before even graduating from grade school.

I am already in my early 30's but my vision is still 20/20. If it's not impossible, I want it to stay that way forever. When I was my son's age, there we're still no handheld video games invented at that time. These gadgets bring so much stress to one's eyes.

Summer break has officially started last week. These past two weeks, my son has been very busy. Busy with online and handheld games. I ask him everyday, sometimes force him, to practice his soccer kicks and basketball dribbling. He obeys for a few minutes and goes back to his games. 

I already have a plan to lure him away from the gadgets that are slowly destroying his eyes. Sports and art classes, but these classes will start after the Holy Week. Until then, I just have to find ways to steer him away from the computer and his handheld game.

Do you have any suggestions?

My son, RJ, doesn't have a Nintendo Wii. Why? Because he already has a Nintendo DSi. His classmate though called him loser because he's the only one in school, according to that classmate, who doesn't have a Wii.

I said to RJ, "You are not a loser". In my opinion, the real losers are those people who buys things just because their neighbor or friend has one. It doesn't matter if one can afford it, what matters is one should only buy things that they need.

Should I buy him one? Maybe not now. What do you think?
