top 10 house rules for kids

04 April 2011

When my son was in preschool, I read an article about one house rule that covers all other house rules on the face of this earth. I adapted that rule in our own house.

No Hurting
That's the one and only one rule in our house.

No hurting yourself, others and the things around you.

house rules

This one rule in our home didn't confuse RJ when he was still a little boy. Very easy for a preschooler to remember. Up to now, same rule is still followed in our house.

study time!

What would you do if your child suddenly loses interest in studying? How will you deal with it? Or have you been in that situation in the past? How did you solve the problem? How did you help your child?

study time

I do try to be patient and understanding (tries real hard to conjure every single good trait a mom should have) whenever he says, "I don't want to study Mama". But when I've tried all tricks up my sleeve and he still becomes more adamant to not study, by himself, I then study with him. He doesn't want that because I tend to ask questions not covered by the book and I advance him to the next lesson.

He'll be in 4th grade next year, hopefully he'll be more diligent in studying by himself. I don't want to tutor him for like forever. What about you? Does your child likes to study?

working mom's sacrifice

Some mothers choose to work not just to prove their worth in this world. They work for their family's future, particularly that of their childrens future.

I'm a stay-at-home mom. I do work at home so I'm also a work-at-home mom some days. But the money I earn is nothing compared with that of my friends who works in big companies. I put on hold my wants, needs and dreams so I can take care of my son.

I did make a lot of sacrifice. But just like me and other stay-at-home moms, working moms also made a lot of sacrifice. They missed most of their kids' firsts -first step, first word, first smile. And the worry of leaving their kids with people who are not even related to them. That's the sacrifice that working moms have to endure.

And stay-at-home moms, like me, also have sacrifices... that I will write in length on another article.

investing in a school service business

I don't want to drive, due to too many reckless drivers, on the streets of Manila. I have no idea how I was able to finish the driving lessons I enrolled in a few years back. My son has to go to school on a school service, because of my unwillingness to drive on the dangerous streets of Manila, since 4 years ago.

I am not happy though with the buses accredited by the school. We have transferred from one bus service to another for the past 4 years. And I am running out of choices.

This whole week the bus's aircon wasn't working. The owner has decided to just have the bus fixed during the weekend. She didn't even bother to look for a replacement bus. One time the bus just stopped on the middle of the road. The bus company doesn't have people who's in charge of giving roadside assistance to buses who will encounter problems while on the road.

If this keeps up, I might decide to buy a school bus. I have been thinking about it for months already. I will definitely buy a new one. And yes, I will drive these irresponsible people out of business. I'm sure I'll give a better service in giving the kids a comfortable ride to and from their houses.

you will always be my baby

"Mama! Why did you call me baby in front of my classmates?" My son was smiling but I know that I've embarrassed him again. I am so used to calling him "baby", I just can't help but forget that he's now a 9-year old boy.
big boy

"Oh! I'm sorry. I'll try not to call you baby in front of other people. But always remember that you'll always be my baby."

I'm really, truly sad that he's not a baby anymore. There'll come a time when he'll be taller than me, in 2 years based on how he's been growing, but he'll always be my baby. Soon he'll be a teenager and might (but hopefully not) need acne treatments, but he'll always be my baby.

unwanted pounds after giving birth?

So you just gave birth? Congratulations. Nothing can beat the joy, and yes- stress as well as sleepless nights, of being a new mom. I know you're anxious to get a regular sleep. What? Belly bulge? I hear you. I've been there. It's not really hard to lose that belly bulge if one is determined and disciplined enough.

Herbal pills can help you lose your excess weight fast. But if you're breastfeeding, ask your doctor about it first.

parents, listen to your children

Because you're the parent does not mean that you know everything. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't listen. Being a parent doesn't mean that you're the only person allowed to talk. You have to let your kids voice out their own opinions. It doesn't mean that your child is disrespecting you, except when it was said in a disrespecting way.

If you still think that you're right, put yourself outside of the situation. Only then will you be able to see the whole picture. Only then will you solve the problem.

protect your baby's skin

Diaper rash is a common condition that can cause mild redness, soreness and scaling to a baby's skin. The leading cause, of these rashes appearing on baby's delicate skin, is irritation brought about by soiled diapers that are left on for too long.

To prevent RJ from having rashes, when he was still using diapers, I make it a point to apply a diaper rash ointment as often as necessary. I do that with each diaper change especially when I forget to change his wet diaper for a prolonged period of time (such as bedtime).

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is a diaper rash ointment that has been featured on The Oprah Show, People Magazine and ESPN to name a few. Boudreaux's Butt Paste was specifically formulated by a pharmacist with direction from a respected pediatrician to provide effective diaper rash care. It spreads on easily, cleans off quickly, and has a pleasant scent.

20/20 forever

This blue eyeglasses look so cute. But not when I imagine RJ, my 8 year old son, wearing it. He is very addicted with online games as well as with his handheld game consoles right now. I am very concerned that he will have poor eyesight before even graduating from grade school.

I am already in my early 30's but my vision is still 20/20. If it's not impossible, I want it to stay that way forever. When I was my son's age, there we're still no handheld video games invented at that time. These gadgets bring so much stress to one's eyes.

Summer break has officially started last week. These past two weeks, my son has been very busy. Busy with online and handheld games. I ask him everyday, sometimes force him, to practice his soccer kicks and basketball dribbling. He obeys for a few minutes and goes back to his games.

I already have a plan to lure him away from the gadgets that are slowly destroying his eyes. Sports and art classes, but these classes will start after the Holy Week. Until then, I just have to find ways to steer him away from the computer and his handheld game.

Do you have any suggestions?
