homeschool?

Here I am again, confused whether to homeschool RJ or not. He’s a very smart boy but his report card last quarter made my heart sink when I saw it. His grades are better than more than half of his class but, still, it was way down below my expectation.

If I homeschool him, he’ll have more time for sports, art and music class. And we’ll also have time to travel. He’ll learn more things outside of the classroom than inside the classroom. And maybe we can stay in the province for good, pollution here in the city is very bad. We can stay in a different province every month or two. Maybe we can buy park models, we can bring our house anywhere we like.

Sounds fun!

But first things first. I have to decide first whether I have the patience to teach my son 24/7.

The idea of homeschooling my son has crossed my mind more than a dozen times.

He joined a new swim club last month and some of the kids there are homeschooled. One mom was trying to convince me to homeschool RJ for a year. She said that her daughter’s curriculum is exactly the same with St. Paul, an all girl’s Catholic school here in Manila. She further said that if my son is homeschooled, just like with those enrolled in an online nursing degree, his study pace will depend on his capacity in understanding the lesson.

There are days when he gets bored in school because of the repetitive lessons that goes on for days. Traditional schools do this  for the benefit of students who doesn’t understand the lessons right away.

I want him to have more time with other activities, like sports, arts and music, instead of just concentrating on academics. But there was always the question of socialization. He’s an only child, he only gets to play with his cousins during weekends. How will he make friends if he is homeschooled?

What about you? Do you homeschool your kids? Why or why not?

fight his own battles?

It's very important for kids to learn how to fight their own battles. Dealing with their own little problems will help them become stronger emotionally and physically.

But I am one protective Mama. As much as I want to ignore it, I can't help defending my son RJ whenever I see him getting bullied. But no matter how the school tries to make these little bullies good, if they have tons of practice being a brat in their own home---they will forever be bullies.

As for letting my son learn how to fight his own battles, I think I should just close my eyes and cover my ears whenever he's with other kids. He can defend himself when I'm not around. I should let him do that too when I'm around instead of being as fast as a tornado in bullying the bully.

Or should I just homeschool my son so he doesn't have to get acquainted with bullies?
